The difference between pure sine wave and modified sine wave in portable power station

Mar. 14, 2025

Output waveform

Pure sine wave: The output voltage waveform quality is very high, almost comparable to the mains power supply, with low harmonic distortion, and can provide high-quality AC power.

Modified sine wave: The output current waveform is close to the sine wave, but there is a certain distortion, contains more harmonic components, and the waveform continuity is poor, which is not suitable for inductive loads and capacitive loads.

Electrical performance

Pure sine wave: It can provide stable output voltage and frequency, with low voltage fluctuation and frequency error, suitable for equipment and systems with high requirements for power supply stability.

Modified sine wave: The electrical performance is relatively poor, and the stability of the output voltage and frequency is not as good as that of pure sine wave, which may interfere with some equipment with high requirements for power supply quality.

Conversion efficiency

Pure sine wave: The conversion efficiency is high, which can better utilize energy and reduce energy waste.

Modified sine wave: The conversion efficiency is relatively low, usually between 80% and 90%, which is slightly lower than that of pure sine wave.

Scope of application

Pure sine wave: It has a wide range of applications and can meet the power supply requirements of most electronic devices, including inductive loads, capacitive loads and resistive loads, such as laser printers, copiers, magneto-optical hard disks, some laptops, fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts, power tools with "solid-state" power or variable speed control, some battery chargers for cordless tools, some new microprocessor-controlled furnaces and pellet stoves, radios with digital clocks, speed/microprocessor-controlled sewing machines, medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, etc.

Modified sine wave: It has a limited scope of application and is only suitable for some relatively low-requirement devices, such as televisions, computers, lamps, etc.

Price cost

Pure sine wave: The technical requirements and costs are relatively high, so the price of its inverter is usually more expensive than that of modified sine wave inverters.

Modified sine wave: Due to its simple structure and technology, the cost is low and the price is relatively cheap.

In summary, there are obvious differences between pure sine wave and modified sine wave in output waveform, electrical performance, conversion efficiency, etc. When choosing a portable power station, the appropriate inverter type should be selected based on the specific usage needs and equipment requirements.
